Ubimus 2024 Macau

The 14th International Symposium of Ubiquitous Music (UbiMus) was held 31 October – 2 November at the University of Saint Joseph, Macao, China. SoundLab members who participated include:

  • Ian TANG Yat Yin showcased his electroacoustic music composition “Aesthetic Atlas of Urban Mechanics”, played in the 23.1 hemispheric loudspekaer rig deigned by ottosonics. Enrique Tomas, one of the developers of the system, participated at Ubimus (and shared his work in a demo session as well).
  • Lyu Qiaosheng gave a paper co-authored by Ryo Ikeshiro entitled “Noisy Flesh: Prototyping an e-Textile Sonification Interface”, which will soon be available in the Conference proceedings.
  • PerMagnus Lindborg held a workshop presenting the Open Ambisonics Toolkit, together with Giuseppe Pisano (participating on remote) and Karen Yu. The slides are here. We are preparing next phase of the Open Ambisonics Toolkit, OAT, get in touch if you are curious & keen!
  • Karen Yu, long-time SoundLab friend and collaborator, presented a paper “Push The ENVELOPE: A Project to Explore Creative Engagement between Musicians and Audiences in Hong Kong”, co-authored by PerMagnus Lindborg. The paper describes her initiative to create an interface between secondary school music creativity and the young professional sonic arts scene in Hong Kong. Like Qiaosheng’s paper, it will soon be available in the Proceedings, and Karen has been invited to partake in the upcoming AC&C special issue on Ubimus Cross-Cultural Approaches to Interaction and Creativity.
  • Last but not least, Valentina Caiola took the ferry to attend the proceedings 🙂

The events were hosted by Professor Gérald Estadieu and his team at University of Saint Joseph. The Campus is charming and well equipped, especially with the aforementioned ottosonics 23.1 rig, both in an AudioLab configuration and a mobile dodekaotto rig, which they pack in bags and travel with e.g. recently, to Vietnam. There were many mutual interests, and we (especially PM, Gérald, Enrique) are looking into the feasibility of exchanges USJ-SCM, centering on Ambisonics EAM, 3D printing, and audio hardware/software. Stay tuned!
