Dr Parakrant Sarkar

Dr Parakrant Sarkar defended his thesis in December 2025, and took up a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor at SRM University-AP, Andhra Pradesh, India. He is the second PhD alumnus from SoundLab. Check out Para’s webpage. Here’s his testimonial::

I completed my PhD at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong, where my research focused on learning-based music enhancement for real-world recording scenarios. During my PhD, I was part of SoundLab, whose collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment played an important role in shaping my academic growth and research direction. I was also fortunate to secure research internships at Huawei and Sony CSL, which gave me valuable exposure to industrial research and broadened my perspective on real-world audio and AI applications. I have now joined SRM University–AP, India, as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. My current work focuses on MIR, audio signal enhancement, and neural audio effects for music and speech processing applications. The freedom to explore and develop my own research ideas under PM [PerMagnus, supervisor], together with the supportive atmosphere at SoundLab, helped me build both strong technical expertise and a broader artistic understanding of sound, which continues to influence my teaching and research.
