Independent Study (SM5315/SM6310)
- The production component should be accompanied by a significant written theoretical text.
- Independent study projects are not the appropriate venue for introductory-level training in media hardware or software. That is, in a production-centered independent study, you should already be fluent in any skills and technologies required to complete the project.
- Scheduled classes receive top priority for the allocation of designated hardware and software. Independent study classes have a lower allocation priority. If hardware/software is required to complete the project, please ensure that it is available prior to moving forward.
In the MFACM, independent study projects more often take the form of a production or technical project, although students may also use the class for other purposes, e.g., to pursue research related to an anticipated thesis project. In any case, a production-centered MFACM independent study also should include an accompanying theoretical text, and a pre-existing mastery of relevant hardware and software is required.
The duration of independent study projects is one semester. As you prepare a proposal, you should take note of this time frame.
