About

The increasing number of possible applications for spatial audio technologies has caused renewed interest on the subject and resulted in a more widespread diffusion of techniques and practices. However, the lack of an integrated methodology for teaching these technologies is clear. Hence, the Open Ambisonics Toolkit (OAT), a hardware-software system for spatial sound pedagogy, fills an important gap. OAT promotes a democratisation of spatial audio through a DIY approach together with free and open source software (FOSS), to serve tertiary educational institutions as well as independent artists, composers, and designers who are working with sound. This will be the first OAT workshop in Hong Kong. Through a practical, hands-on approach, participants will be familiarised with its modules, learn about the design of a low-cost Ambisonics system, try out several spatial configurations of custom-built loudspeakers, and participate in listening experiences where they can compare OAT with other systems, including headphones, stereo speakers, 5.1, and SoundLab’s hemispheric 20+ loudspeaker array. Participants are encouraged to bring their own sonic materials for listening and spatial sound development. For more information, see publications below.
