SoundLab presents :: Good Company Arts: Daniel and Donnine Belton

SoundLab proudly present Daniel and Donnine Belton of New Zealand-based Good Company Arts, recently having their work “OneOne” showcased by Sino Group on the media façade of Royal Pacific Hotel overlooking Victoria Harbour. They will be giving a lecture-dem of their work with dance film, movement, performance, VR, and immersive installation, including “Ad Parnassum – Purapurawhetū” (2023, with music by Gillian Whitehead), “AXIS” (2017, with co-composition and surround sound design by PerMagnus Lindborg) and “Astrolabe – Whakaterenga” (2018). Our guests will share VR and film samples from the latest Good Company Arts work, “Pōtaka Nautilus” which premiered last week in Spain at Museo de Navarra for Festival After Cage.

Daniel is Artistic Director and Co-Founder of Good Company Arts. Daniel brings decades of international experience as a dancer (Arc Dance Co London, Lindsay Kemp Co Barcelona, Tanz Company Gervasi Vienna, Douglas Wright Dance Auckland etc), choreographer and theatre deviser. His digital practice spans 30 years working in film, cinematography, projection mapping,motion capture, film editing, print art, music, sound, visual design and VR. He was visiting Media Artist in Residence at Massey University, and later Arts Council of New Zealand’s Choreographic Fellow for 2010. In 2015 Daniel was made an Arts Foundation of New Zealand Te Tumu Toi Arts Laureate. He is a member of OISTAT International Organisation of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians. His research has been published with the International ScreenDance Journal and Sapienza University Press, Rome. Various international museum/gallery catalogues and art magazines feature prints and writing from his oeuvre with Good Company Arts. He is a PhD Candidate at Massey University College of Creative Arts - Toi Rauwharangi, Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand. Daniel’s Māori whānau affiliation is through uncle Dave Tawhai Bodsworth: Iwi are ko Te Ati Awa, ko Rangitane a Wairarapa rātou ko Rangitikeiko Te Tau Ihu o Te Waka a Māui, ko Ngāti Rarua, ko Ngāti Mututunga, ko Toarangatira, ko MuāUpoko. Daniel's Samoan affiliation is with his aunty Janet Pereira, married to uncle Ed Pereira of Apia. Donnine is Creative Producer and Co-Founder of Good Company Arts. A New Zealand School of Dance graduate, she has performed with renowned choreographers and dance-film makers inNew Zealand, Europe and the United Kingdom. She has received critical acclaim for her work and has been the recipient of the Creative New Zealand Tup Lang Choreographic Prize. Donnine is acknowledged internationally for her work as a dancer-choreographer, pedagogue, designer and producer. With a background in performing arts and yoga, she offers a unique understanding of space and form. Based in Ōtepoti New Zealand after living in Europe during the 90’s, her work delivers a distinctive artistic quality that merges contemporary dance and design idioms.Donnine brings insightful direction from concept through to delivery, alongside management skills to Good Company Arts. Donnine's Māori and Samoan affiliation is with sister in law Liana Harrison (Ngāi Tahu, Waitaha, Kati Mamoe, Ngāti Tama, Ngāti Toa, Te Atiawa). Liana’s Samoan grandfather came to Aotearoa from his village Nofoalii on the main Island of Upolu in Western Samoa. Good Company Arts creates live events, exhibitions and installations through the fusion of multiple art forms. Projects have been produced and presented fortheatres, art galleries, museums, found spaces, new media and architectural facades, cinemas, planetariums and VR. Working from Aotearoa New Zealand,the award winning company is internationally recognised as arts and design innovators - championing choreography, visual arts, craft, new music, digital arts,film and moving image technologies.
